In Alabama in 1830, an eight-year-old boy named Moses Pettiware from North Carolina was sold on the slave block to Arthur Barton of the Cunningham Plantation (Barton Hall) in Cherokee, AL. Moses was forced to take the Barton surname because he was sold to the Barton Plantation. Moses' lineage was a mixture of Black and Cherokee Indian descent. In 1866, Moses married a full-blooded Cherokee Indian named Lue Thompson.

Together they had 14 children, 13 of which lived. Their children were:

  • Robert Cartrey Barton married a petite young lady named Signora Houston in 1901. As a result of that union, Robert and Sig had 12 children of their own:

  • Cora Lee
  • Sam Robert
  • Earl Cartrey
  • Owen Houston
  • Gurniece Ellen
